Herringbone flooring is a classic wood floor pattern where rectangular planks are arranged in a staggered zigzag formation, with each piece meeting the next at a 90-degree angle. Chevron flooring (also called French herringbone) uses planks cut at 45-degree angles so the ends meet in a continuous V-shape. Both patterns are available in solid 3/4" hardwood or engineered construction, custom-milled from Appalachian White Oak, Red Oak, Maple, or American Walnut.

Precision Milling:
It all starts with proper milling — more so with herringbone than with any other pattern. If herringbone piece widths do not add up exactly, the pattern will be impossible to maintain. Czar Floors uses laser-guided precision equipment to keep consistent dimensions. Tolerance for dimensional deviation does not exceed .005” in the width or profile of any one piece within a batch. Please note that wood dimensions may change slightly during transportation. Proper acclimation of the wood on-site should help ensure uniformity of pieces.
Wood Material:
Czar Floors uses top-quality Appalachian White Oak lumber, (Quercus Alba) grown in the northern United States. Compared to other white oak species, this wood material has much more consistent color variation, tight grain, beautiful "honey" tone when finished. It is known for its strength, durability, and consistency.
Lead Time:
Every Czar Floors Herringbone flooring is made to order to your specifications. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks before shipping, depending on the type, quantity, and size.
Insured Shipping:
All shipments are fully insured and trackable. A tracking number will be sent to you by email once your order has shipped.
In the rare event of damage or loss, we will handle all carrier claims and resolutions.
For herringbone orders, Czar Floors uses FedEx Freight (LTL).
FedEx Freight service is "curbside delivery," meaning the truck will deliver to the end of your driveway. Lift Gate service is included for parquet orders over 800 sq. ft. to lower pallets to ground level.
Please note that in the New York City vicinity and New Jersey, we deliver for a flat $350 fee in any quantity. Please call us or e-mail us to place an order in those areas. Please get in touch with us for an accurate shipping charge quote for other parts of the country.
We include a Notification Service so the carrier will call ahead to schedule your delivery appointment. We recommend having your contractor or an assistant available to help unload the floor.
Packaging and Handling:
Herringbone is palletized, shrink-wrapped, and strapped for maximum stability during transit. Herringbone flooring is packed in manageable bundles. Once pallets are unstrapped outside, the flooring can be moved inside bundle by bundle. Parquet must be moved to a climate-controlled area immediately.
Custom-Made Product Returns:
As a custom-manufactured product, herringbone and chevron is non-returnable and cannot be canceled once production has begun.

Herringbone & Chevron Pattern Repeat Calculator
Enter your room width to visualize how herringbone or chevron repeats fit your space, then select a board size to compare layouts.
You may consider installing strip flooring as borders or extending the same wood into other rooms. Add regular random length boards from matching wood if needed: "Plank and Strip Flooring."
Consider the Rift/Quartered sawn (R/Q) wood option for radiant heated floors, a more formal look, or if installing on concrete. Another option for radiant heat is engineered floors.
Please get in touch with us for prefinished flooring options. The minimum prefinished flooring quantity is 600 sq.ft.

Herringbone & Chevron Floors Common Questions
What is the Difference Between a Chevron Pattern and Herringbone?
How to Measure Herringbone Floor?
You may estimate the quantity by using our on-line Flooring Calculator or visualize and estimate your project using an On-Line Floor Designer. Please make sure to account for waste when specifying the order quantity - It is typical to add 10% to 15% overage.
Use the Pattern Repeat Calculator above to find the repeating pattern dimensions and visualize how different board sizes fit your room.
How to Install a Herringbone Floor?
Herringbone floors are typically installed piece-by-piece in various configurations, either parallel to the wall or diagonally. Herringbone often looks best with the points running in the longest direction of a room or directed at a focal point. Diagonal installation visually expands the room but requires more material - add at least 15% extra if you are doing this type of installation.
For the best results, the herringbone is installed by glue-down or a combination of nail-down and glue-down. Herringbone pieces have grooves on three sides and one tongue on the long side.
